Why Is Cannabis Criminalized in the US?

On Tuesday, marijuana reform advocates are marking the 50-year anniversary of a federal report recommending cannabis decriminalization. The report, compiled by a commission appointed by Richard Nixon, called for an end to criminal penalties for marijuana use.

Even though marijuana is now legal in some form in more than half of the United States, Nixon’s drug warrior legacy still holds sway over cannabis policy. Even the current Democratic president who campaigned on ending cannabis criminalization has yet to take action.
